Music Festival App

about.

Music festivals are exhilarating, but they can also be overwhelming. Between managing conflicting set times, navigating crowded grounds, and keeping track of friends, the attendee experience often suffers from "information overload."

For this project, I designed a dedicated mobile companion app for Starstruck Festival. The goal was to create a seamless digital experience that empowers attendees to focus on the music rather than logistics. The app provides intuitive scheduling, interactive navigation, and real-time updates, ensuring users can maximize their festival experience with minimal friction.

challenge.

My process followed a user-centered design approach, moving from structural definition to visual polish and rigorous testing.

Phase 1: Sitemap

I began by mapping out the application’s structure to ensure logical navigation.

  • Goal: To determine the hierarchy of critical pages (Lineup, Map, Schedule, My Account) and how they interact.

  • Outcome: A clear sitemap that prioritized the "Lineup" and "Schedule" as the primary user flows, ensuring the most important information was never more than two taps away.

Phase 2: Wireframing & Usability Testing

Before committing to visuals, I created low-fidelity wireframes to lay out the interface and core functionality.

  • Testing: I conducted initial usability tests with participants to validate the navigation flow.

  • Iteration: Feedback revealed that users struggled to find the favorites button, and that the news section should be more compact. I iterated on the design by relocating this feature to a more visible area, and making the news section use screen space more efficiently,

Phase 3: Visual Identity (Moodboard & Colors)

Once the layout was solid, I developed the visual language of the app to match the festival's energy.

  • Moodboard: I curated a moodboard focusing on keywords like flowering and dreamy.

  • Color Palette: I selected a color palette featuring pink as the contrasting color against a dark background. This choice was not just aesthetic. It ensures the app remains legible in low-light festival environments while preserving battery life.

Phase 4: High-Fidelity Prototyping

I applied the visual identity to the wireframes to create an interactive prototype.

  • Interactivity: I engineered connections between screens to simulate real app behavior, including micro-interactions for buttons and transitions between the schedule and map views, as well as working filters to make navigating easier.

Phase 5: Heuristic Evaluation

To refine the final prototype, I conducted a Heuristic Evaluation based on Nielsen’s 10 Usability Heuristics.

  • Focus: I specifically examined "Aesthetic and Minimalist Design" and "User Control and Freedom."

  • Result: This evaluation flagged a need for unified backgrounds, which I have changed in the prototype.

The final deliverable is a high-fidelity, fully interactive prototype that balances functional utility with an immersive brand aesthetic.

Key Features:

  • Smart Scheduling: Users can "favorite" artists to build a personalized itinerary that notifies them 15 minutes before a set begins.

  • Interactive Map: A geo-located map that filters stages, food vendors, and restrooms.

  • Offline Mode: Critical data is cached locally, ensuring the app functions even when network service is congested at the event.

This project demonstrated the importance of iterative testing. By validating my wireframes early and performing a heuristic evaluation on the final prototype, I was able to catch usability issues that would have otherwise frustrated users during the live event.
